Senior Sales Representative at Advanced Door Automation Retires After 41 Years In the Door Industry
Advanced Door Automation (ADA), last week, announced Henry Rutledge’s retirement after serving 17 years with the company and over 40 years in the industry!
Advanced Door Automation, a Horton Automatics Company, is a branch of Door Services Corporation.
Henry started his working career managing a retail store which required working seven days a week.
“I was having to work the most when I wanted to be off the most. A childhood friend convinced me to apply at a door control company in our hometown.”
Since starting in the door industry, there have been a lot of memories throughout the years. I really enjoyed the relationships I’ve had with many of my colleagues as well as customers. I always tried to create a culture of fun in the office, it made for a better place to work.”
Henry was instrumental in building the business for Advanced Door Automation in North Carolina. He and his wife, Tammy, started ADA from nothing when Horton gave them the line following Dorma’s acquisition of Carolina Door Controls. Henry managed sales and operations while Tammy managed all the office and accounting tasks. Horton Automatics acquired ADA in 2012 and Henry continued to successfully grow the business.
One of his fondest memories was being able to hand his employees a Christmas bonus during the first year. Another notable moment was working alongside executives at Horton Automatics and landing a $650,000 project, the job was a huge success.
When asked to provide some words of wisdom to someone new coming into the industry, Henry comments,
“New salesman should focus on making their customers’ job easier. Get their price requests back to them as soon as possible so they can get their quote to their contact and off their ‘to-do’ list. Also, when you quote someone, the items you exclude are as important as the items you include. If it’s worth remembering to a customer, it’s worth putting in writing.”

In Henry’s retirement, he plans to continue living at the beach at least 4 days a week and spending time with his four beautiful grandchildren so he can be more involved in their activities. He also has a ‘to-do’ list that will keep him busy for a while!
The teams at Advanced Door Automation and Horton Automatics wish Henry the best in his retirement, his presence and hardworking commitment to the business will be missed.
